Remember the other day when I renounced my love for Green Smoothies? Well, I take it back.
I woke up craving one. This time though I added a scoop of vanilla whey protein to make sure the flavor was right on. And it was. Also in the mix: 1 frozen banana, 1/2 cup of frozen organic blueberries (which gave it a lovely brown hue…kidding), AT LEAST 3 cups of organic baby spinach and some unsweetened vanilla almond milk. It was really good and I felt especially healthy knowing I had had so many green veggies by 8:00am Open-mouthed
After breakfast I headed over to the yoga studio to start learning my new “job.” I’m going to be helping out there this Summer and I’m really excited about it! I spent a couple of hours there learning how to work the computer system and how to make sure everything is in order while I am there. Cool!
I spent a good chunk of the afternoon running errands but I was lucky enough to squeeze in a quick yoga session and a thirty minute bike ride. It has shaped up to be quite a nice day here despite some morning rainfall. Although my little trip meter on my bike told me it was 93* outside. HOTTTTT. I always feel bad for when it’s this hot out because she has such a thick coat. Luckily she got groomed today and has short hair now…
Someone must have been chopping a carrot. Our dogs can’t get enough! Cute.
Moving on to dinner. Remember how we had raw pasta for dinner last night? Well about 8 minutes after we ate a package was delivered…
A spiralizer! Even though we had zucchini noodles last night, I had to make them again tonight. No vegetable is safe my friends. I may spiralize our entire house when no one is looking. This is about half of an organic zucchini and the “noodles” came out perfect.
So cool! I used some leftover raw tomato sauce sauce from last night and topped the noodles with a broiled portobello mushroom cap drizzled with some balsamic vinegar to make for a really delicious dinner.
It’s not totally raw because of the cooked mushroom but it was still delicious and healthy (and vegan!). I think I may attempt a “pasta” salad with some zucchini noodles in the very near future. Stay tuned.
I also made…curly fries. Yep, I told you I was going to spiralize everything in the house. The spiralizer has 3 blades, one for thin, thick strips, and two for thin curly strands (one is thicker than the other…thin for the noodles and thick for the curly fries). The possibilities are endless.
I made these for my brother and he liked them! And the best part is that they were fun to make. Guard your vegetables. I’m on the loose.
Off the Mat
This past Tuesday, after a wonderful flow yoga class, I had the pleasure of spending time with a few fellow yoginis at the studio. Each Tuesday this group meets to study yoga, to expand their yoga beyond just the physical asana practice, and to really learn what living yoga is all about. I was so excited to be included in the group this past Tuesday and just had to share what we discussed.
We watched this video. It’s called The Story of Stuff and gives a glimpse into how all of the, err, JUNK we have gets into our hot little hands. Don’t get my wrong, I’m guilty as charged! I drink bottled water and eat off of paper plates when it’s convenient. Oh, and sometimes I forget my green bags when I go in to the store. These are just a few of my many offenses.
As I thought about what I had just watched, I realized that what it all boils down to is a bit of laziness on my part. I could easily avoid paper plates and just wash one of the nice ones we have after a meal. I could easily fill my reusable Sigg water bottle up with some filtered tap water. And I could also turn my lazy ass around in the grocery store and march myself to my car to get my bags where I left them (yep, I’ve been that lazy before!). I’m quite embarrassed to admit that I’m often to lazy to do the above things, but I think that our culture is just very used to convenience. We all just want to get through the day as quickly and easily as possible.
Another point made in the video is how we are treated as consumers here in the US. We have been told our whole lives that we will be happy if we just buy this or that. Do we really need all of this stuff? And why do we think we do? Its slightly ironic that I talk about this now after i just announced my new purchase (the spiralizer). Do I really need perfectly curly vegetables shaped like noodles…I’m going to have to go with no.
I highly encourage you to watch the video whenever you get a chance. It’s about twenty minutes long but I think you will be shocked with what you will learn. Don’t worry, you don’t have to watch sad polar bears surrounded by melting ice caps. The video is very straight-forward, light-hearted, and intriguing!
Since I’ve watched it I have been very aware of how I am going about my day. I’ve been brainstorming ways to make a little bit more of an effort and be a little more “green.” How do you stay “green?” What are simple things we can do everyday to reduce our impact on the Earth? I’d love to hear your thoughts and hopefully compile all of them into a single post to share with you guys. So please, leave your comments here!
